GIMAC participated in a strategic initiative by Gabonese authorities on June 16, 2025, at the BEAC Amphitheater in Libreville. Chaired by Mr. Mark Alexandre DOUMBA, Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation, this meeting officially marked the national deployment of the GIMACPAY QR Code, an interoperable payment solution aimed at modernizing the Gabonese economy.
Strong Governmental Impetus for Digital Transformation
The day, which brought together the highest governmental authorities, professional associations, and leaders from banks, microfinance institutions, telecommunications operators, and fintechs, was marked by a unanimous consensus: the future of commercial transactions in Gabon will be digital, inclusive, and secure.
In his opening speech, the Minister of Digital Economy reiterated the commitment of the highest authorities to make digital technology a lever for growth and modernization. “With an exceptional mobile penetration rate and a strong political will, Gabon has all the assets to succeed in this transition. Our objective is clear: greater simplicity, increased inclusion, and a direct impact on the daily lives of Gabonese citizens,” the Minister stated, in essence.
The GIMACPAY QR Code: A Pan-African Solution for the Gabonese Market
At the heart of the discussions, the presentation of the GIMACPAY solution demonstrated the relevance and robustness of the interoperable QR Code. This technology allows any holder of a bank account or electronic wallet, regardless of the operator, to pay simply and instantly at a merchant by scanning a unique code.
A 3-month deployment schedule was presented, providing for gradual implementation for merchants and consumers, including phases of technical implementation, stakeholder certification, and training. The effective deployment of the first interoperability solutions is expected nationwide within the next three months.
This historic meeting in Libreville not only marks the launch of a new payment method but also the beginning of a new era for the Gabonese economy, resolutely focused on innovation and digital inclusion.
